MEDO’s History

Mtoni Education Development Organization (MEDO) came into existence as a result of the motivation and personal initiative of its founder to enhance the socio-economic status of the underprivileged people. Hailing from a rural family, the founder was no stranger to hardships faced by the underprivileged. Having overcome economic and social challenges, due to the backing and economic blessings from certain elder society leaders, the founder set out to do his best to make a positive difference in the lives of fellow underprivileged.

Working with a team of committed people, MEDO’s aim has been to secure integrated development through people’s participation. The key areas identified for interventions include education, climate, health, food & water security, sustainable livelihood, innovation, youth engagement, and child, women & girls empowerment. Our efforts have developed lasting association with government, non-government and corporate organizations as also with the communities and groups with whom we have worked.

MEDO registered as Non-Governmental Organizations with Registration No. 00GNO/00007702 of dated 29th December 2014, under Act, No. 24, 2002 of United Republic of Tanzania Mainland. MEDO will implement a wide variety of projects related to education transformation, climate adaptation & mitigation, human rights & social justice, gender equality, food & water security, leadership, agribusiness, soft skills in financial inclusion, alternate energy sources, girls & women empowerment through social research, and wasteland development. Also, perform dissemination of socially relevant knowledge, social intervention through training and field action, contribution to social and welfare policy and program in Tanzania.

While implementing different developmental projects, our thrust has always been on working through people’s participation, and the focus has been on the disadvantaged and marginalized section of societies, such as women, children and youth. At MEDO, we have always believed in the capacities and capabilities of the communities, and have always strived to channel their hidden energies for the betterment of society at large. Our efforts have always been directed towards creating an environment that is conducive of enhancing opportunities to local people to think and act positively.

We have always endeavored to develop skills and competencies of the local communities with a view to enabling them to operate and maintain the assets created through the implementation of the projects on sustainable basis. This philosophy of ours has led us to adopt a holistic and participatory approach to rural-urban development. We believe in inclusive approach, covering all the sections of the society, particularly the underprivileged, in a village. We work with the existing village level fora (and creating new ones wherever necessary) through Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approaches, principles and techniques.
